have fun ~ because your other choices are to have a bad time, to be bored, or to be absent

Sure, you'll find yourself in the middle of things that you'd rather not be doing. (Great reason to enjoy the time you have to spend there?) Remember there is inspiration in tenacity, joy in accomplishment.

HINT: you probably won't get that far if you're not having fun. When fun comes to you, like on a tropical vacation or at a super cool party, it's a good time. But when you create your own fun, amidst hard life lessons or a big stack of papers ho hum, you know life is good.

And you're right....you make it that way. On purpose.
